It’s About Both of You: Groom's role in Weddings

It’s Time to Pay Tribute to Grooms: Yes, Wedding Photos and Content Are Often Bride-Focused, but We Can't Forget Them!

When we talk about wedding photography, it’s natural for our attention to gravitate toward the bride. The dresses, the radiant smiles, the excitement—all these details exude a unique charm that we instinctively want to capture and cherish forever. But isn’t it time we also focus on the other key figure of the day? The groom, whose presence and elegance complete the perfect harmony of a wedding day.

Lately, I've been noticing an increasing involvement of men in planning their weddings, and I find this to be a particularly positive shift. A wedding is a celebration that is just as meaningful for both partners, and when grooms are actively engaged in the process, it not only livens things up but also adds more joy and significance to the big day.

Wedding Planning—A Team Effort

It’s becoming more common for me to receive wedding photography inquiries directly from the groom, not just the bride. This is not only a sign that the wedding day is equally important to him, but it also shows that this celebration is a shared project where both partners contribute. Traditionally, many believe that the burden of planning falls on the bride, but more and more modern couples are proving that the groom can, and often does, play a key role in the organization.

This trend brings several positive benefits:

  1. Shared Involvement Leads to Mutual Understanding: When both partners are involved in planning their big day, they gain a deeper understanding of each other’s preferences and priorities. This strengthens their relationship, encourages better communication, and builds a shared vision for the wedding.

  2. A More Balanced Division of Responsibilities: Wedding planning can be overwhelming, and it often comes with many small but important tasks. When both partners share the workload, it not only reduces stress but also ensures that the final result reflects both of their personalities. The groom’s participation can make the entire process smoother and more enjoyable for everyone involved.

  3. Enjoying the Day Equally: Perhaps the most important aspect is that both the bride and groom will enjoy the day equally when they have been involved in making it happen. When the groom understands the effort that goes into every detail, he can fully appreciate the magic of the day, having been part of its creation from the beginning. This shared experience enriches the celebration, making it more memorable for both.

Grooms Playing a More Active Role in Wedding Photography

Traditionally, wedding photography tends to focus heavily on the bride, from the delicate lace of her dress to the sparkle in her eye as she walks down the aisle. While this is undoubtedly beautiful and important, there is a growing need to spotlight the groom's side of the story as well. Today’s modern grooms are stepping up, often in ways that deserve more attention. Their style, their excitement, their interactions with friends and family—all of these moments contribute to the rich narrative of the wedding day.

In my own experience as a photographer, I’ve seen grooms take on roles that are both active and creative. Whether it’s selecting a specific location for photos, contributing ideas for poses, or even suggesting certain shots they know will mean a lot to their partner, grooms are now taking ownership of their wedding day visuals.

One example that comes to mind is Jamie, who was deeply involved in planning his international wedding, which hosted over 70 guests. Coordinating such a large event can be an enormous challenge, but when the big day arrived, he embraced every moment. Surrounded by his brothers and closest friends, he was relaxed, joyful, and fully present in every scene—something that translated beautifully into the photos.

His involvement in the planning process was key to creating this relaxed atmosphere. Rather than being overwhelmed by the occasion, he thrived in it because he had invested time and effort into the event. His groomsmen, who had been with him throughout the process, brought high energy and added an extra layer of meaning to the celebration.

Capturing the Groom’s Story

In capturing Jamie’s wedding, it became clear that the groom’s journey is as rich and dynamic as the bride’s. The moments shared with his friends, the quiet nervous excitement before seeing his bride for the first time, the laughter and energy that fill the air when he’s surrounded by his closest allies—these are all moments worth preserving.

As a photographer, I aim to showcase the groom’s experience in a way that complements the bride’s story, without overshadowing it. After all, a wedding is about the union of two people, and the story would be incomplete without representing both sides. For grooms, this means being intentional about what they want to highlight in their wedding photos. Do they want to capture the camaraderie with their groomsmen, the quiet reflection moments, or the big emotional beats of the ceremony? It’s important for grooms to voice their preferences and take an active role in shaping their wedding album.

The Importance of Speeches: Giving Grooms a Voice on Their Special Day

One of the most memorable and emotionally charged parts of any wedding day is the speeches. While the focus often leans towards the bride and her family, the groom’s speech holds a unique significance and carries weight not just in words, but in the emotions and memories it encapsulates. Whether it's a heartfelt message to his partner, a funny anecdote shared with friends and family, or a touching tribute to those who have supported the couple, the groom’s speech is an essential part of the celebration, serving as a platform for him to express his feelings openly and meaningfully.

Why Grooms’ Speeches Matter

  1. A Moment to Reflect on the Journey: The groom’s speech offers a rare opportunity to pause and reflect on the relationship that led to the big day. Often, grooms use this time to share their perspective on their love story, recounting special memories or pivotal moments that brought them and their partner closer together. It’s a chance for the groom to speak directly from the heart, offering a glimpse into his personal experience of the relationship. This not only touches the hearts of guests but also creates a meaningful moment between the couple.

  2. Gratitude and Appreciation: A key element of the groom’s speech is showing gratitude to the people who played a vital role in the couple’s lives and their wedding journey. Whether it’s thanking the bride’s family, acknowledging the support of friends and family, or giving a special mention to his own parents, this part of the speech reflects a deep appreciation for the love and care that helped shape the day. This gesture not only strengthens bonds with the guests but also emphasizes the importance of community in the couple’s life together.

  3. A Chance to Honor the Bride: In many weddings, the groom’s speech is an emotional highlight because it’s often the first time he publicly shares his feelings about his bride. These moments are full of sincerity and deep affection as the groom expresses what his partner means to him. Whether it’s a short, simple declaration of love or a carefully prepared tribute to the bride, this part of the speech often becomes a cherished memory for the couple.

A Few Tips for Grooms Preparing for the Big Day

  1. Get Involved in the Details: Don’t be afraid to take the lead on certain aspects of the wedding. Whether it’s choosing the music, planning the logistics, or coordinating with vendors, your input matters. Plus, the more you’re involved, the more satisfying the big day will feel.

  2. Communicate with Your Photographer: If you have specific ideas for shots or want certain moments emphasized, don’t hesitate to share those thoughts with your photographer. Your wedding photos should reflect both you and your partner, and that means having a say in the creative process.

  3. Embrace the Moment: Wedding days can be intense, but the key is to stay present and enjoy every second. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and enjoy the ride. Your photos will reflect that energy.

Conclusion: It’s About Both of You

While much of the wedding day attention is often directed at the bride, it’s essential to recognize that grooms play an equally important role. Their input, energy, and style contribute to the success of the day, and their story deserves to be told. By involving grooms more in both the planning and photography processes, we create a richer, fuller picture of what a wedding is truly about—a union of two people, equally invested in making the day unforgettable. So, here’s to the grooms! Let’s make sure their voices are heard, and their moments captured with the same love and care as their brides.
